When privacy, productivity and personal comfort & wellbeing are the primary considerations, Viso Acoustic Glass Partitions deliver exceptional sound performance and peace of mind. Our acoustic glass walls combine superior sound privacy, achieving up to 39dB(Rw) – single glazed and 48dB(Rw) – double glazed, with minimalist good looks and a genuine sense of spaciousness.

To ensure optimal performance, acoustic glass partitioning must be considered as part of an overall acoustic strategy, which includes other elements of the building fabric. The Viso Partitions team has over 50 years of combined experience in the field of acoustic partitioning, and can provide guidance and assistance to ensure the completed installation achieves the performance expected. Guidance for Acoustic Glass Partitions

Viso Partitions supply and install exceptional performance acoustic glass partitions and acoustic glass doors, achieving excellent levels of sound reduction between workspaces, particularly in large open plan offices. For maximum performance, we utilise special laminated acoustic glass. Each glass pane helps to attenuate some of the sound, with extra sound insulation provided by the acoustic laminate interlayers.

The performance of all our acoustic glass partitions and doors is independently certified for client peace of mind. But even laminated glass in itself does not act as an acoustic absorber. Some of the sound waves are reflected around the space, thus indicating the possible need for additional methods of sound control, depending on the overall level of acoustic performance desired. Therefore, acoustic partitions and doors should be considered as part of a comprehensive acoustic strategy, along with other building finishes.

Sound can largely be controlled in four ways:

  • Absorption – the control of reverberation (resonance or echoing).
  • Insulation (or attenuation) – the control of sound between adjacent spaces.
  • Diffusion – the spreading or scattering of sound to reduce intensity.
  • Active Control – the use of inverse sound waves to cancel out unwanted noise.

In terms of practicality for workspaces, we will confine ourselves to Absorption and Insulation.

Absorption
Sound waves are reflected around the surfaces of any spaces. Generally, hard surfaces will reflect all the sound waves without absorbing any of the energy. This can lead to a build up of sound energy and reverberation – the unpleasant echoing effect often experienced. The solution is to use materials in the space that will absorb some of the sound energy. Materials such as acoustic ceiling tiles, soft furnishings and floor coverings and, in some cases, acoustic baffles can all contribute to sound absorption for improved acoustics in the workspace.

Insulation
A glass partition can insulate sound transmission – room-to-room in adjacent workspaces – in the range of Rw 32-48dB, depending on the specification of the partitioning.

  • Single Glazed – toughened glass:  Rw 32-34dB
  • Single Glazed – acoustic laminate:  Rw 39dB
  • Double Glazed:  Rw 44-48dB

Any glass partition wall will invariably include at least one door. This is a weak point for sound transmission. Doors also vary in their level of sound insulation, depending on their specification.

  • Frameless glass door:  Rw ???dB
  • Framed glass or timber door (with acoustic seals):  Rw 31-32dB
  • Framed high acoustic single or double glazed door:  Rw 39-45dB

Therefore, it is important to match a door to a partition system for consistency of sound insulation performance.

Acoustic Vulnerabilities – Flanking Sound
The actual in-situ performance of glass partitioning will be affected the specifics of location in the building and the installation of the system. The interface of the partition with the floor, adjacent walls and the ceiling provides a potential route for sound energy to be transmitted from room-to-room and devalue the sound attenuation properties of the glass partition.

This travel of sound around sound resisting or sound insulating elements is known as flanking. Research has shown that it is ceiling systems that have the largest impact on acoustic performance due to flanking. This is due to:

  • sound moving over the top of the partition via the ceiling void
  • sound moving via ventilation grilles & ducts and through ceiling light fixtures
  • Low attenuation ratings of some ceiling systems

In addition, sound can travel under the partition via the underfloor void and around the partition rack elements fixed to the floor, wall and ceiling bulkheads.

Addressing Flanking Sound – Site Specific Issues
Every installation and site will have their own specific issues. Here are some of the basic ways to address them:

Via the Ceiling Void or Underfloor Void

  • Installation of a high dB performance ceiling system
  • Overlaying fibrous insulation on the back of the ceiling, in the void*
  • Cavity barriers to block the ceiling or underfloor void

*care required as insulation may move during maintenance, greatly reducing effectiveness and laying insulation over recessed light fixtures may void the warranty.

Via Ventilation Ducting Grilles & Ceiling Light Fixtures

  • Specification and location/placement of suitable grilles and/or ceiling lights
  • Attenuators within ventilation ducts

Installation Flanking Sound

  • Airtight caulk sealing of partition track to walls, ceiling and floor during installation
  • Acoustic drop down seals to doors and acoustic seals to door frames
  • Use of simple ‘teg blocks’ to block air gap at ceiling grid

It should be noted that the retro-fitting of acoustic seals, cavity barriers etc is much more difficult than designing them into the project at an early stage and installing them initially.

Available as both single glazed and double glazed glass walls, Viso Acoustic Glass Partitions deliver exceptional sound insulation performance, utilising laminated acoustic glass with special acoustic interlayer material. For single glazed glass wall systems, up to 39dB (Rw) can be achieved. For enhanced acoustics, double glazed systems offer up 48dB (Rw) sound performance. Best results are achieved when used in combination with our range of acoustic glass doors – delivering sleek good looks as well as superb technical results – and consideration must be given to other elements of the building fabric, to minimise flanking sound via the ceiling, light fittings and doors etc.. Contact Viso Partitions for expert advice and guidance on acoustics around glass partitioned offices.

Viso Acoustics Glass Partitions offer simple and minimalist clean lines, appearing as a solid wall of glass. Ultra slimline track and profiles ensure a sleek contemporary finish that can enhance or complement any interior space.

It is widely accepted that good acoustics can significantly enhance any workspace. Meeting and board rooms come to mind most readily, with the need to stop confidential discussions being heard outside of the room. Breakout rooms or call centres, where conversations can become lively, also have a requirement to stop any noise generated disturbing people in adjacent spaces. But the effect of constant, often low background noise on the comfort, health and wellbeing of employees is often overlooked. Viso Acoustic Glass Partitions can help to remove or reduce these intrusive sounds, contributing to a more pleasant, positive and healthy environment. This in turn results in a more productive workforce, improving concentration and a personal comfort.

Viso Acoustic Glass Partitions are available as standard in 4 contemporary profile powder coat colours. They can also be supplied in any RAL colour, to meet your project’s design aesthetics or customer corporate colours. To complete the project, the glazing can be finished in a choice of standard manifestation film, or your own design of bespoke graphics for an individual appearance. Alternatively, popular contemporary glazing bars can be added without compromising the acoustic performance, creating a stunning industrial style, or art deco New York loft style finish. Internal, adjustable blinds provided further opportunity to create a fully individual and bespoke to meet any client’s exacting demands.

The finishing to touch to any Viso Acoustic Glass Partitions project is the choice of doors. Optimum acoustic performance is delivered by our range of single and double glazed Acoustic Glass Doors. Alternatively, we have a range of standard framed glass doors and a huge selection of hollow core and solid core timber doors. Whatever your requirements, Viso Partitions  have the solution to your acoustic partitioning needs.
